Emergency, urgent, or can it wait
Pain that keeps you awake, wakes you at night, or does not respond to over-the-counter pain relief is a same-day problem. So is swelling of the gum, cheek or jaw, a tooth knocked out or pushed out of position, a broken tooth with a sharp edge or an exposed nerve, and bleeding that will not stop. Swelling in particular is not something to sleep on. Dental infections spread through the tissue planes of the face and get harder to treat the longer they run.
A few situations belong in a hospital emergency room first, not a dental chair. If swelling is closing your eye or moving down your neck, if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, if you have a fever alongside facial swelling, or you have taken a blow to the face and think your jaw may be broken, go to an ER. Call us afterwards and we will handle the dental side.
A lost filling, a crown that came off cleanly, or a chip that does not hurt is usually urgent rather than an emergency.
What to do in the next hour
For a knocked-out adult tooth, time is everything. Pick it up by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline rather than tap water, and do not scrub it. If you can, put it back in the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth to hold it there. If you cannot, keep it in milk or in your own saliva and get to us immediately. Call on the way.
For pain, take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packet and hold a cold compress against the outside of your face. Never hold an aspirin against the gum. It burns the tissue and does nothing for the tooth.
For a lost crown or filling, keep the piece and bring it with you. Pharmacy dental cement can cover a sharp edge temporarily. Do not use superglue.
For bleeding, bite firmly on folded gauze for fifteen minutes without checking. If it soaks through repeatedly, call us.

As a rule, call before noon and we can almost always see you the same day. Later than that we will fit you in as soon as we can, and we will tell you honestly if that means first thing tomorrow.
Tell whoever answers what is actually happening. Where the pain is, whether there is swelling, whether it wakes you at night, and how long it has been going on. That is how we triage and how you land in the right slot.
Bring a photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, and a list of your medications and allergies. We are at 106 W Gray Street in Midtown Houston. What emergency treatment usually involves
The visit starts with an exam and imaging, often CBCT 3D imaging when an infection or a fracture needs to be seen properly. The first goal is getting you out of pain and getting infection under control. The definitive repair sometimes happens the same day and sometimes at a follow-up once things have settled.
If the nerve inside the tooth is infected or dying, an emergency root canal by our endodontists, Dr. Bohluli or Dr. Terrany, cleans out the infection from inside the tooth and releases the pressure behind the throbbing. If the tooth cannot be saved, our oral and maxillofacial surgeons handle emergency extraction, including difficult and broken-down teeth, with sedation available. An abscess may need draining before anything else can be done.
A broken or lost filling or crown can be covered with a temporary from $150 while the permanent restoration is planned.
Antibiotics on their own are not a fix. They can hold a spreading infection back, but the source still has to be treated.
What it costs, and how insurance works in an emergency
You get the price in writing before treatment starts, even when you are in pain and want it over with. That is the whole point of a written quote. Nobody should agree to something they have not seen the cost of.
The emergency exam and imaging come first, and they are what tell us what is actually wrong. Temporary repair of a broken or lost filling or crown starts at $150. What a root canal or an extraction costs depends entirely on which tooth it is and how complicated it turns out to be, so we quote those once we have looked, not before.
We verify your insurance free of charge, including while you are sitting in the chair, and most plans cover an emergency exam and a share of the treatment. If you are uninsured, ask about our in-house membership plan. For larger treatment we offer financing through Cherry, Affirm and Sunbit, so cost is not the reason you stay in pain.
