What happens at your first Invisalign visit

Your first visit starts with a straightforward exam. We check the health of your teeth and gums before anything else, because aligners only move teeth that have a solid foundation under them. If there is an active cavity or gum inflammation, we take care of that first. Then we take photos and a digital scan of your bite. There is no tray of putty involved. That scan feeds your plan, and you get to see how your teeth are projected to move, set by set. We talk through roughly how many trays your case is likely to need, how often you would come in, and what the day to day looks like once you start. Before you commit to anything, you get the plan and the cost in writing, including what your dental plan is expected to contribute. If clear aligners turn out not to be the right tool for your bite, we say so and walk you through the alternatives instead.

Wearing your aligners day to day

Aligners only work while they are in your mouth, so plan on about 20 to 22 hours a day. In practice that means they stay in except when you eat, drink anything other than water, brush, or floss. Patients who are honest with themselves about that number tend to finish close to their projected timeline. Patients who leave trays sitting out through long lunches tend to stretch it out. Take them out to eat, then brush before you put them back in. Coffee, tea, and red wine will stain the plastic if you drink through your trays, and sugary drinks get trapped against your enamel. Rinse the trays in cool water and brush them gently. Hot water warps them. Keep the case with you. The most common way people lose an aligner is wrapping it in a napkin at a restaurant. If you do lose one, call us before you decide to jump ahead to the next set on your own.

Attachments, refinements, and your check-in visits

Most cases use attachments, which are small tooth-colored bumps bonded to a few teeth to give the aligners something to grip. They are the reason clear aligners can handle rotations and other harder movements, and they come off at the end of treatment. Some cases also need a small amount of space created between crowded teeth so those teeth have somewhere to move. The first day or two in a new set usually feels tight, and sometimes a little sore. That pressure is the movement happening, and it settles quickly. Over the counter pain relief is enough for most people. Check-in visits are short. We confirm your teeth are tracking with the plan and hand you the next several sets to take home. Near the end, many patients get a round of refinement aligners to fine-tune the details. That is a normal part of the process rather than a sign that something went wrong.

Retainers and holding your result

Teeth do not simply stay where you put them. Straightened teeth drift back toward where they started if nothing holds them, which is why retention is part of the treatment rather than an add-on at the end. When your last aligner comes out, we fit you with retainers. Most patients wear them full time for a short stretch, then move to nights only for the long run. Some bites are better served by a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth, which you never have to remember to put in. We go over which approach suits your case. Retainers wear out, and they get lost. Watch for cracks or a fit that has gone loose, and tell us early so we can replace one before your teeth have a chance to shift. Bring your retainer along to your regular cleanings and we will check it while you are already in the chair.
