What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a titanium post to anchor a porcelain crown. This procedure is performed in two stages. First, the surgeon will place the dental implant into the bone and allow it to heal. Then the dentist will place the permanent crown onto the implant and adjust your bite to ensure it is perfectly aligned. Over time, the titanium post will fuse to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration, helping the dental implant last a lifetime.

When do you need a dental implant?

Dental implants can be the best option for patients who are missing multiple teeth. Unlike dental bridges, which can put too much strain on your anchor teeth, dental implants are stronger, and better equipped to withstand the biting impact. Non-smokers with good health have a little risk of complications from this procedure.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants act as a substitute for the tooth root. They are cylindrical posts that can also be tapered. They are usually made of titanium. Placed on top of dental implants are connectors. These connectors can also be built onto the top of the dental implant and are used to connect the implant to your tooth or teeth. Finally, a crown, which is also known as a replacement tooth, is placed on top. This is made to match your natural teeth. Dental implants are a method of replacing teeth with alternatives that look, function and even feel just like your “real” teeth. If you have lost teeth, due to accident, injury or due to dental issues, you may not be able to eat certain foods or smile with confidence. Also, there is the worry that your facial contours will collapse over time, due to missing teeth.

Are dental implants best for me?

Dental implants can provide you with a natural-looking smile that is pain-free. If you are looking for an option that will provide you with comfort as well as a smile that you can be proud of, then dental implants may be the smile solution that you are looking for. Find out more about your options by reaching out to us today. Dental implants offer patients natural looking teeth without any negative side effects such as worn-out natural teeth or sagging facial skin. Protecting existing healthy natural teeth and keeping the shape of your face can be as easy as choosing the implant option. Implants are also highly effective at protecting the jawbone from deterioration over time.

How do I care for my dental implants?

You should care for your dental implants the same way you would care for your natural teeth. This means that you should brush them regularly, floss, and go to all regular cleanings and check-ups with your dentist. Since this is a long-term solution, you will want to make sure you take good care of them so they can last a lifetime. Patients must be thoroughly educated and retrained before deciding to commence implant therapy in each unique case. The ability of the patient to understand financial, time, and maintenance obligations is crucial and must be made clear to the patient from the dentist and staff initially and during subsequent appointments.

Missing Teeth?

Many patients suffering from tooth loss never explore dental implants because they believe they are too expensive or the recovery is too extensive and restrictive. To make a truly informed decision regarding dental implants, every patient owes themselves the gift of a consultation appointment to learn the real truth about implants and ensure they’re making a decision based on real numbers and accurate information that only an oral surgeon who has examined their mouth and reviewed their x-rays can provide. There is an estimation that 69% of Americans between the age of 35 to 44 have at least one tooth missing. By the age of 74, one in four people will have lost all of their natural teeth. Teeth that have been restored using dental implants cannot get cavities. However, that doesn’t mean you do not need to take care of them! You should still take proper care to ensure that they do not get damaged in other ways.

Am I a right candidate for dental implants?

To determine if you should choose dental implants, you should ask yourself these questions. You should determine if you want a smile that you can be proud of and not embarrassed by if you want a smile that you do not have to worry about over time, and if you want a natural looking smile. If you want any of these things, dental implants are the best option. In modern dentistry, dentists seek to bring patients back to normal functioning, with aspects such as comfort, tooth contour, appearance, speaking and general health and well-being in mind. If teeth are suffering from decay and require replacement, in the past there were fewer options. With the advent of implant dentistry, dentists now have the ability to bring back function and appearance of teeth as if the patient’s tooth difficulties, gum atrophy or periodontal disease or lost teeth have not occurred.

What are the benefits of dental implants over other treatments?

Several benefits make dental implants the preferred choice. They include the fact that they are a long-term solution and are built to last, they protect your natural bone, they protect your healthy teeth, they do not interfere with your speech, and they allow you to continue to eat your favorite foods. Most notable of all is the fact that dental implants as they heal become directly bonded to the jawbone. Implants become part of the patient’s jaw. This permanent and secure type of placement helps to reduce bone loss in the immediate area of the implant.

Are dental implants safe?

Dental implants are very safe, and the procedure is one of the most predictable and safest of dental procedures. You should always make sure you use a trained dental implant dentist for reduced risk. Additionally, dental implants are the strongest devices available for replacement teeth while also stimulating the natural bone underneath any missing teeth. Dental implant surgery is considered safe and predictable, as long as a skilled and experienced dental implant dentist is engaged in the process. It is the recommended procedure for teeth replacement since once replaced, your teeth will feel, look, and work naturally. Also, implants are preferable because they stimulate the bone beneath the missing tooth.

Why do people choose dental implants?

When someone loses a tooth or several, there are many different options available to remedy the issue. Dental implants are a common choice for a variety of reasons including the fact that they are the next best thing to healthy and natural looking teeth. When you opt for dental implants, no one will ever know that it is not your natural tooth or teeth.

Will I have teeth in between the steps of the dental implant procedure and while my custom crown/bridge is being made?

You will have a variety of options available to you during the process. One of these options will be temporary teeth that can be placed in the gaps. This is one of the most commonly chosen options. These teeth will integrate with your natural bone. You will want to talk to your dentist to determine what the best option is for you during the process.

Does it hurt to get a dental implant?

As with any surgery, you will have some discomfort and possibly some bruising after the implant has been placed in your jawbone. This can vary depending on the patient and a variety of other factors. However, most people say that they feel better than they had expected after the procedure is complete. Most people can return to work and other activities the next day.

Who should perform the dental implant procedure?

Dental implants can be very complicated, and you want to make sure you use a dentist that will carefully place any implants and help to avoid an implant failure or other complications. To help with this, you should always find a dentist that has the right education and training to get the job done right the first time. It should be a dentist that is also a credentialed dental implant expert.  You should always make sure that anyone who will be performing dental implant surgery is directly trained in the field. At Omega Dental Specialists we know how to treat and maintain, happy healthy smiles. All our surgeons are board certified.

What are the risks of dental implants?

Dental implants are safe and effective and have been used for decades. Complications are rare, but that does not mean that there are no risks. These risks are higher for individuals who have certain medical conditions or smoke. Some of the risks that you face include infection, tooth roots, inadequate jawbone preventing the procedure from being completed, damage to your other teeth, sinus issues, fractures, numbness or tingling, nerve damage, and implant failure.

How long does it take to restore one or more teeth using dental implants?

Because every situation is different, there is no hard and fast rule. You will be provided with an estimation with your treatment plan. Your healing time depends on a variety of factors including your medical and dental history, the condition of your jawbone, your restoration needs, materials used, and the technique used. You can expect multiple appointments and the overall time for complete restoration can range from a few months to over a year. During this time, you will be able to live your normal life.

What are the most common complications of implants?

The most common complications of dental implants are related to biomechanical lapses and conditions. Implant failures may result from micromovement of the implant from too much stress placed upon it. Prostheses or abutment screws may become loose from bending or moment forces. Implant or component fracture may occur from fatigue conditions. Prosthesis failure may result from all of the foregoing or bending fracture resistance. In addition, the manifestation of biomechanical loads on dental implants (moments, stress, and strain) controls the long-term health of the bone-implant interface.

Are dental implants covered by insurance?

More and more insurance companies are offering coverage for dental implants, but every insurance plan is different. You will need to check with your carrier to determine what will and will not be covered. If it is not covered by your insurance carrier, you should ask them if they can provide you with an allowance towards the procedure that is equal to the cost of dentures or a bridge. Also, if it is not covered, you should ask the dental office if they have to finance or can work with you on payment options.

How much do dental implants cost?

It is difficult to estimate exactly how much your dental implants will cost because every patient and customized treatment are different. However, once you have had your initial appointment, your dentist should be able to provide you with a treatment plan and an estimated cost. If there are any changes in either of these presented items throughout your treatment, they should inform you.
