What is Scaling & Root Planing?

As plaque and bacteria build up underneath the gum line brushing and flossing become less and less effective in cleaning. Scaling and root planing, also known as periodontal therapy, is the technical process of removing hard to reach plaque and similar material from underneath the gum. Failure to do so will cause gum disease and bone damage.

When Do I Need A Scaling & Root Planing?

A dentist’s examination and diagnosis is the first step. After an examination confirms a serious presence of plaque under the gum line, the dentist or periodontal specialist will perform a systematic deep cleaning of each tooth area, removing any reachable plaque and bacteria. The process is more thorough than a regular cleaning, so a local pain reliever may be used if a patient has every sensitive gum. Once finished, a patient will be likely advised to use an over-the-counter pain reliever for discomfort the first day or so. The cleaning is then maintained by regular brushing and flossing by the patient at home.
