Facial pain is exactly that, pain in the facial area that is acute or ongoing. The condition is more of a category of a number of pain types which can also be caused by a number of different symptoms. In extreme cases, it is one of the more difficult conditions for dentistry specialists to diagnose because many times the visible causes are hard to find by visual examination, x-ray or similar. As a result, some patients feel ignored or wrongly accused of potentially being a painkiller addict. In fact, five categories of facial pain exist, ranging from nerve damage to bone death.
When the facial pain has continued for longer than two or three days, does not subside with over-the-counter medicines, or is extremely acute, a patient should see a dentist for a professional examination. A fall or hit can cause serious pain but with a pain reliever, ice and rest many times these injuries go away. A pain that continues, swells or increases after the RICE treatment (rest, ice, compression, elevation) is a sure sign of something potentially serious. Dentists will look for physical causes first, but nerve damage can often be a root cause and hard to see just from traditional tools. Detailed communication by the patient can help a dentist potentially locate and treat the issue far better than guessing.
The costs of your root canal treatment may usually be covered by your dental insurance plan or extended dental coverage. If you are looking for more information about a specific service and the costs associated, contact one of our representatives for help.
