A root canal is a procedure done to repair a tooth that has become infected. The gum area is numbed, and the dentist removes the infected pulp using a drill. Once the root canal is free of the infected pulp, the area is filled with inert material. The structure of the tooth remains the same, but the tooth is no longer sensitive to temperature extremes. The goal of a root canal is to save the existing tooth, to prevent the need for a complete tooth replacement.
When you have extensive tooth decay in your tooth, or the pulp within your tooth is infected, your dentist may recommend a root canal. When you are experiencing severe pain in your tooth, this is generally caused by inflammation of the root canal pulp. If you have a cracked tooth, or deep decay, it is likely that you will need to have a root canal to relieve the pain you are in. The only other way to relieve pain from a painful tooth is to remove the tooth completely.
The costs of your root canal treatment may usually be covered by your dental insurance plan or extended dental coverage.
