What is Gum Cancer Screening?

A twice-yearly gum cancer screening is critical for the early diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer. Dentists and dental hygienists are trained to identify at-risk lesions and changes in the mouth that may be indicative of oral cancer or increased risk of oral cancer. Early identification of high-risk changes in the mouth can expedite further testing and treatment, decreasing risk of morbidity and increasing the patient’s potential for a full recovery.

When Do I Need A Gum Cancer Screening?

A gum cancer screening consists of a thorough oral evaluation. During the evaluation, the dentist or hygienist examines the tongue, cheeks, gums, tonsils, under the tongue, lips, throat, and soft tissue of the mouth. He or she identifies any areas of concern and determines whether to biopsy, monitor, treat, or refer to a specialist. Using dental mirrors and special hand tools, the dentist is able to see in areas that patients cannot see themselves, increasing the chance of identifying any concerning lesions early. Oral cancer screenings should be performed twice annually, typically during a scheduled dental cleaning.
