What is Fluoride Therapy?

Fluoride therapy is a type of dental treatment designed to protect your teeth from tooth decay. Tooth enamel protects teeth from decay and cavities, but bacteria have the ability to eat away at your tooth enamel. This treatment is generally applied to teeth in a varnish or gel form for just a few minutes. After fluoride therapy, you will be unable to eat or drink for 30 minutes, giving the teeth time to absorb the fluoride.

When Do I Need A Fluoride Therapy?

When do you need fluoride therapy? Your dentist may suggest treatments once or several times per year, depending on your risk for tooth decay. Fluoride therapy is particularly important for children as the primary and permanent teeth come in. These treatments can also prevent the build-up of bacteria around the gums, fighting tooth decay and gingivitis while helping children establish good long-term oral health. If you require special oral care, such as braces, fluoride treatments may be needed more often to keep bacteria from being trapped beneath braces.
