What Are Incognito Braces?

Also generically called “invisible” or “lingual” braces, Incognito braces are an innovative twist on traditional metal braces produced by 3M. With Incognito braces, the orthodontic brackets (small pieces of metal situated on each tooth) are hidden behind the teeth next to the palate and tongue. This contrasts with standard braces, which place these brackets on the outer side closer to the lips and cheek. Because of this tricky positioning, Incognito braces require an especially skilled orthodontist to install and adjust.

When Do I Need Incognito Braces?

Like other types of braces, most people choose Incognito braces to for aesthetic reasons to improve how their teeth look. Incognito braces can be used to correct any of the same tooth alignment problems normally treated by standard braces, including malocclusions (overbite or underbite), gaps, and crookedness. In particular, Incognito braces are a good solution for adults and teens who want to keep their braces out of sight but have problems not correctable by clear aligners like Invisalign braces.
