Formally known as Oral Medicine and Pathology, the specialty of Oral Pathology focuses on identifying, diagnosing, and treating diseases or disorders that affect and impact the normal function of the mouth as well as the lower area of the face (i.e. jaw line area). Many times the discipline works towards narrowing down possibilities of a problem cause so that samples can then be taken to determine the core cause. Known as a biopsy, a physical sample can then be tested by the dentist via lab work to determine any abnormalities. One of the most common abnormalities is cancer, which can grow in any part of the body.
Abnormality changes can happen both inside the mouth and around the jawline. Gum tissue, cheeks, tongue, teeth line, and even the neck can be involved. When an abnormality is identified by examined biopsy, the information will be communicated back through your regular dentist. Based on the results, a referral is then made to a specially-trained surgeon and dental profession to address the pathology identified. The surgeon will examine the affected area and make the determination if surgery is needed and how it will be applied. A patient can then agree to the procedure or seek a second medical opinion. In most cases the diagnosis is confirmed as well as the treatment advised to the patient.
The cost of biopsy and surgery are usually covered by your dental insurance plan or extended dental coverage.
